As Head of Sales for Capital One Auto, Joseph Portera leads a national sales organization dedicated to empowering a network of more than 17,000 dealers with industry-leading lending and software solutions. He is a central figure in Capital One’s mission to transform the car-buying experience through innovation, helping dealer partners leverage data-driven tools to connect with customers more effectively across both digital and in-person channels. Known for his focus on operational integrity and high-performing teams, Joseph and his team provide dealers with the tailored support and transparent processes they need to drive business growth and deliver a seamless experience to every buyer.
Prior to leading the sales organization, Joseph spent eight years as the Business Chief Risk Officer for Capital One Auto. In this role, he helped ensure innovative, data-driven solutions could be brought to our customers in a well-managed, efficient way. He also previously served as Chief Legal Counsel for Capital One Auto, where he built a specialized legal department to navigate complex regulations and provide strategic guidance to the business.
Before joining Capital One, Joseph was an equity partner at a national commercial litigation firm. His extensive background in risk, law, and litigation provides him with a unique perspective on driving business growth while maintaining a steadfast commitment to operational integrity.
Joseph graduated magna cum laude from Colgate University with a B.A. in English Literature. He earned his J.D. with high honors from the University of Texas School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and the Texas Law Review.
